  • Update on Lenovo Yoga N23 Chromebooks

We posted an announcement earlier reporting that AIR had received several reports that Lenovo Yoga N23 Chromebooks freeze when an ELPA21 Speaking test is administered on the Chromebook. We now have an update on this issue. The cause of the issue has been traced to some code in the Chrome operating system. Google expects the issue to be fixed with the release of Chrome OS 65 on March 13. Until Chrome OS 65 is released, the ELPA21 Speaking test should not be administered on Lenovo Yoga N23 Chromebooks. This issue only affects Lenovo Yoga N23 Chromebooks. We have not encountered any issues with other brands of Chromebooks.

  • Update to Chrome OS Secure Browser

An update to the Chrome OS Secure Browser (version 3.1) will be posted in the Chrome web store for download next week. We have received some Help Desk cases indicating that student’s Chromebooks occasionally “go to sleep” when the student is in the middle of a test session but is taking a long time to read a passage or think about the response to a question. This update will over-ride the Chromebook’s settings and prevent a Chromebook from powering down and “going to sleep” while the student is taking a test. The updated Secure Browser will only prevent the Chromebook from powering down while the student is logged into a test. At all other times the Chromebook’s settings will determine when the Chromebook power down. Installation of this update is voluntary. Students will be able to continue to test on Chromebooks where it has not been installed.

  • TIDE Limited English Proficiency Status Field

Limited English Proficiency Status must be coded “yes” for all students taking the summative ELPA21 test. Students will not be permitted to log into a summative ELPA21 test unless this field is coded “yes.” Students taking the ELPA21 screener do not yet have a determination of whether they have limited English proficiency. Therefore, this field does not need to be coded “yes” for students taking the screener.

  • Reminder: 17-18 Secure Browser Must Be Installed by January 1

Secure Browser 9.0 will not be supported for ELPA21 Practice Tests, Screeners, or Summative Tests starting January 1, 2018. Secure Browser 9.5 (for Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.8) or Secure Browser 10.0 (for all other supported operating systems) must be installed on any computers used for secure ELPA21 testing by January 1, 2018. To determine which version of the Secure Browser is currently installed on a computer, open the Secure Browser. The version number is displayed in the bottom right-hand corner of the "Sign In" box. The 17-18 Secure Browser can be downloaded from the Secure Browsers page of the Nebraska portal.

  • Updated ELPA21 Practice Tests Available

Updated ELPA21 Practice Tests are now available. Students should complete the Practice Tests for their grade prior to taking the ELPA21 summative test so they become familiar with the technology and the item types. There are two changes to the practice tests this year:

    • The practice tests have been divided into four separate tests for each grade band: one test for each domain. This mirrors the way the ELPA21 summative tests are administered.
    • Two new speaking items have been added to the speaking practice test. These items are similar to new speaking items that will appear on this year’s summative test.

Student Practice Tests can be accessed using supported web browsers or the Nebraska Secure Browser. The TA Practice Test administration site can be accessed using supported web browsers.

  • Update: Administering ELPA21 on iPads

iOS 11.1 for iPads has been released and it resolves the security issue AIR identified with iOS 11.0. All iPads that had iOS 11.0 installed should be upgraded to iOS 11.1 prior to administering the ELPA21 screener or summative test.

  • Orders for Paper, Large Print, and Braille Tests for the ELPA21 Summative Assessment

The ELPA21 Summative Assessment window is February 5 through March 16. Orders for paper, large print, and Braille tests for the ELPA21 Summative Assessment must be placed in TIDE by November 17 to ensure delivery to districts prior to the start of the Summative test window. To place an order for paper, large print, or Braille tests click on “Paper Ordering” under “Preparing for Testing” and then choose “Initial Orders.” Choose a school in your district and then click “Search.” An order window will open. Enter the quantity of materials you need and then click “Save.” Four versions of the Braille test are available: EBAE Uncontracted, EBAE Contracted, UEB Uncontracted, UEB Contracted. Please make sure you order the correct version. The quantity of kindergarten and grade 1 paper writing tests your district receives will be automatically calculated based upon the number of students uploaded in TIDE for your district so paper writing supplements are not available for direct order. Some orders may require state approval before they are processed, so please place your order for paper, large print, and Braille tests as soon as possible.

An additional order window will open on February 5 for orders for paper, large print, and Braille tests for any students who enrolled in your district after the November 17 cut-off for initial orders. Orders placed during the additional order window will be extracted and shipped daily. At that time you will also be able to order additional kindergarten and grade 1 paper writing supplements if needed.

  • Administering ELPA21 on iPads and Mac Computers

Due to a security concern with iOS 11 for iPads, which allows apps other than AIR SecureTest to be opened during the login process specifically on devices that are not governed by a Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution, AIR recommends using iOS 9.x or 10.x until iOS 11.1 is released.  AIR is testing the latest beta preview of iOS 11.1 and plans to support that update when it ships to customers. Schools needing to administer secure assessments on iOS 11 in the meantime should monitor students during the login process to ensure only the AIR SecureTest app is open on students’ screens. Once students are logged in, their iPads will be locked to AIR SecureTest and there is no further risk of opening additional apps.

AIR is still testing and resolving issues for Mac OS X 10.13 High Sierra.  At this time AIR recommends that schools avoid using machines with the latest Mac OS X for secure testing. AIR will provide updates as often as possible regarding support.

  • Updates to Secure Browsers

The 2017-2018 Secure Browsers for OS X and Windows will be available on the Secure Browser page of the Nebraska Portal on Tuesday, September 5. An updated Secure Browser Installation Guide will also be posted on the portal. Users will be able to administer the ELPA21 Practice Tests and the ELPA21 Screener using either the 2016-2017 Secure Browser or the new 2017-2018 Secure Browser until January 1, 2018. After January 1, 2018 users will be required to use the 2017-2018 Secure Browser. The ELPA21 Practice Tests and Screener will no longer be accessible using the 2016-2017 Secure Browser.

  • Update to Screener Online Tests

The screener online tests will be updated on Wednesday evening, August 30, to fix an issue with compatibility with the latest iPad and Chrome secure browser apps. Users who reported issues administering the screener on an iPad or Chromebook should be able to administer the test on those platforms after this update is deployed.

This update also includes some changes to the way student test settings are displayed if the TA chooses to review student test settings when approving the student to test. Test settings are now organized into two groups, Designated Supports and Accommodations, rather than in a randomly sorted list. This change mirrors how the test settings are displayed in TIDE and should make it easier for test administrators to quickly focus on the test settings they want to check.

If you have any questions, please contact the Nebraska ELPA21 Help Desk.

  • Assigning Temporary IDs for ELPA21 Screener

Temporary IDs for administering ELPA21 Screener should only be assigned to actual students who do not yet have a permanent SSID and who will not receive a permanent SSID before they need to take the Screener. Temporary IDs should NEVER be used for the purpose of creating “fake” students so that TAs can practice administering the test. Creating “fake” students to practice with the test is an egregious security violation of the test. The creation of “fake” students will also create errors in school and district reporting in ORS and therefore cannot be permitted. Temporary IDs should only be used for real students and they should be changed to permanent SSIDs as soon as a permanent SSID is available for the student. Please always review the training materials and the ELPA21 Screener Test Administration Manual found on your state’s testing portal if there are questions about administering the Screener. The Help Desk and your state-level ELPA21 representatives are also available as needed.

  • Update on Chromebooks

The issue that caused the built-in Chrome recorder to occasionally stop working when a student is recording a response to a speaking item has been fixed. However, our internal testing indicates that speaking response recordings are garbled when recorded on Acer 13 Chromebooks with the Chrome OS 60 operating system. There is no issue with speaking recording on Acer 13 Chromebooks with Chrome OS 59. If you are using Acer 13 Chromebooks in your district we strongly recommend that you not update them to Chrome OS 60 when it is released this week. AIR and ELPA21 will continue to support Chrome OS 59.
